Re: Bank accounts
If you're willing to keep a balance of at least £2k equivalent in euros, then Citibank offer a euro-denominated account for no fees. You can use the debit card across Europe with no fees.

Re: Musical Instrument Shop(s) - Ciutadella?
I'm fairly sure there's a music shop on the main pedestrianised street that runs from Plaza d'Es Born (the one with the obelisk) past the Cathedral towards Ses Voltes (the arches). It's on the right hand side when you're going from Es Born.

Re: Fridge disposal
See this website: http://www.triatgesmenorca.es/deixalleries_donde_se_encuentran.asp This has a map with the tip / recycling places marked. If you click on one, it gives opening hours. Not sure how reliable the information is. Generally, they're open mornings, though for some of them, the opening ti...

Re: Stamp Duty
I was told 4 years so hopefully you'll be ok by now. I'd hoped for at least 1 person to post that someone had been succesful in reducing their bill. They've valued mine at 418k, there's one v. Similar up for 425 now and next door with 1 more bedroom was up for 460. Maybe the best I can do is cough ...

Re: Stamp Duty
A question for those of you who've been affected by this "complementary tax": What is the ratio of the tax office valuation to the "cadastral" (valor catastral) value, the one that's used for the IBI (council tax) calculation and appears on the IBI bill? Also, how did your purchase price compare to ...

Re: Stamp Duty
And to add insult to injury we've had to pay interest on top of the additional tax demanded going back to the date we purchased! This is apparently a new 'interpretation' by the tax office which our lawyer is challenging but I'm not hopeful. That is unbelievable. It implies that the buyer should so...

Re: Stamp Duty
Yes, it does seem an unfair system, where the tax office plucks a value out of the air, as opposed to using the actual price that was paid. On the up side, 8% now could be better than 18% on the capital gain when it's sold one day by you or your heirs. I'm assuming that any future capital gain will ...

Re: Stamp Duty
.....we've just had an email from our solicitor (Belen) she warned us when we bought but guess what, we bought our place €140,000 below market value and owe the tax! Did anyone get any joy from appeals? Thanks in advance Steve Hmm. From what I've read, appeals rarely succeed, but I'm no legal exper...
