Re: Buying a Spanish registered car for Menorca
Thanks, Steve and Shuggie. That's very helpful. I didn't expect it to be simple  Ideal would be a runabout with lots of seats. I'm looking at old VW (70s bay window) microbuses, not at all reliable, but 9 seats to take a big family group to the beach, and easy to fix :) Alternative would be a ...

Buying a Spanish registered car for Menorca
Because of the high cost of car hire in peak season (cost me £900 for two weeks last summer), I'm considering buying an old car to keep on the island. To keep things simpler, I'm looking at Spanish-registered vehicles. Are there any special restrictions on vehicles on the island? Any gotchas that I ...

Re: Stamp Duty
... As an aside; if we pay the extra 7% complementary tax due on their inflated property value now, are we liable to pay less capital gains tax 18% (?) later, when we sell? P. I expect that it's either one or the other with complementary tax on purchase or capital gains tax on a sale, assuming(!) t...

Re: Heating a small villa
Thanks very much. That's some useful info.
Next time I'm over, I'll get quotes to install a flue for a stove through the flat roof of the house. It would be a great thing to have during the winter months.

Oh, how much I'd like to have a wood-burning stove :)
Is it easy to get good seasoned firewood on the island?

Re: Heating a small villa
At the moment we have an open fireplace, we are thinking of putting in a wood burner, but I think it could get to hot in the evenings, so I am also thinking of getting an electric fire that looks like a log burner, could be better just to turn on and off when needed. At the moment we only have air ...

Re: Tax
Looks like it would be tricky to apply, especially with people buying one-way plane tickets.
Don't know how it can fit with the "freedom of movement" principle within the Schengen area of the EU. Surely you can't be taxed for being somewhere?

Re: Heating a small villa
No I don't have a chimney and the roof is only 6 years old and is concrete construction as well but has a rubber membrain under the concrete pad so I don't want to cut through that and risk a leak. I've gone through an external wall with insulated chimney tube. Pictures below hopefully. Not finishe...
