Post by Didsmum » August 27th, 2014, 3:48 pm

If you have Netflix in the UK can you also watch it in Menorca ?

Or is there something similar ?

Not sure about this, you may need a proxy UK IP address.

A VPN virtual private network, this routes your internet connection through a proxy server (eg one in the UK). In simple terms it makes it appear as if you are in the UK therefore bypassing the geo restrictions. An example of a vpn proxy provider is foxyproxy or hide my ass. The free ones will not be suitable for streaming video.

Would not waste your time- look at downloaded solutions if you want something on holiday . Streaming services can detect proxies/ know proxies details ( despite marketing claims of Proxy vendors ) so one day it might work the next day netflix , iplayer etc decide enough is enough and cut it off

Deeply technical stuff :-)

You could be completely correct in some cases. I could rout my internet connection through my own server for £0.00 which is located in the UK, but anyone with half an idea would be able to see that the IP address is owned by a hosting company, not a domestic internet services provider.

Instead I use a commercial offering. I chose the company because they provide domestic internet access to the general public similar to talk talk, plusnet, Zen Internet, virgin etc. If any "streaming services" blocked access from the IP range assigned to them they would also block a sizeable proportion of genuine UK users. One day I may have a particular IP Address assigned to me, the next day that same IP Address could be assigned to Mary Rose of Portsmouth Avenue Dagenham, Essex

The 'hardass detectio'n is not done on IP address :-) they look a UDP packet contents and other low level packet patterns so there is a way to detect these things regardless of how 'clever' the ip addresses are done- so I am told :-)

The proof is in the eating as they say. tvcatchup dot com go to extreme lengths to block viewers from outside the UK, far more than any of the main UK TV channels live/catchup services and so far for the past 6 months I and many friends have not had a problem with them.

I know that this will probably not last for ever and I also know that some of the VPN/Proxy providers continually work to ensure that their services do and will work in the future. I would imagine that its a nice little earner

why don't you download lots of movies from the sites onto your computer before you leave the Uk then you will have them all at your fingertips when you are here>?
