They are closing all schools and colleges on the Island from next Monday and today they have announced the closure of nightclubs, 'pubs', bingos and bookshops, and plan to reduce the planned capacity of all restaurants and bars to a third.
The towns are all very quiet, it seems everyone is staying at home. Shopkeepers in Mahon are particularly concerned about the lack of customers in an already declining town centre.
There are no restrictions on travel “yet”, but they are expected at some time soon.
Hotels and tourist establishments are already reporting upto 30% cancelled bookings for the 2020 season and have called for a suspension on the Ecotax, to help boost the market when it eventually recovers.
As many parts of the island relies solely on tourism, it doesn’t look good for the foreseeable future.
It seems that the good work done by jet2, to extend the season by starting flights a month earlier than normal, in April, may not materialise now, for this year at least.
There is some good news though, that there is plenty of loo roll in all the supermarkets
