Is 2010 going to be quieter than 2009?

Post by thetaz » March 16th, 2010, 2:39 pm

Having read the site over the last few months there doesn't seem to be as many people talking about their forthcoming holidays as there normally is. I know 2009 was a quite year but it appears that 2010 is going to be as quite if not quiter.

Is this because no one's going this year? Or are people leaving it later to book? Or is the site doing such a good job that its already answered every question anyone wants to know about about Menorca?

On a personal note we are returning to Menorca after a two year abscence this year, we normally went at least twice a year, but we are having to completely change the time we are going.

This year we are coming out the first week of June after the May Bank Holiday as it was the only way we could manage to afford it. Accomodation and car hire charges work out almost half the price we would have had to pay in August and flying out on a Monday to Monday we have managed to keep the flight prices down. It meant taking my wife and son out of school for a day but it was the only way we can get our Menorcan fix.

Hi thetaz, long time no hear. :roll:
Totally agree with you and it maybe shows the sign of the times this now. Also peeps could be booking later, all dependant on their jobs in the UK. Hopefully things will step up a gear maybe next year. It's such a shame that this recession has got to everyone and hope that Menorca will continue to attract newcomers as well as bringing back the regulars. :smile: :smile:

Glad to see you are going back over this year :finga: and hope you and your family enjoy yourselves. :ele: :ele: :supz:

Thanks for that Alan, no question about us enjoying ourselves. Always feels so comfortable as soon as we arrive, straight into holiday mode.

Always meet such lovely people there as well. Can't wait!

And as you have already seen Alan on another post I'm getting a sneaky long weekend out there with the boys to show them first had the delights (and bars) of Meneorca!

Depending on who you talk to it's either going to be a great year with loads of advance bookings, or it's been a very slow start to the year and they hope it picks up else it'll be another disastrous year.

Visitor numbers to the site are holding up well, with 52166 visitors in January and 46064 in February and and just under 1000.000 page views. These figures are on par with the last couple of years except the page view, which is up a little. People are visiting and looking but not saying much so far this year.

I've been looking on the site for a few weeks now and this topic has made me reply.
First visited Menorca in 1997, going back for our second visit in July staying in Punta Prima. Will be our first trip abroad with our son who is getting very excited!

Welcome to the site JKC36. Enjoy your visit in July - I'm sure you will notice a few changes since 1997, but nothing too drastic.

Really glad this topic has prompted you to reply.
Menorca is a great place to take children. We took our son to Menorca for his first holiday when he was only 10 weeks old and have been going regularly ever since. He loves it.
Hope you have a fantastic time!

Well as far as traffic figures go through Mahon airport, things aren't too bad:

January = 57,264 +3.2% on 2009.
February = 62,901 -1.4% on 2009.

For comparison, this is how it looked in 2009:

Month ...... Pax ........ % +/- ..... Total Pax.

January .... 55,492 .... -14.8% ... 55,492
February ... 63,772 .... -12.3% ... 119,274
March ...... 79,511 .... -21.0% ... 198,775
April ........ 109,772 ... +2.3% .... 308,547
May ........ 225,132 ... -15.3% ... 533,679
June ....... 325,016 ... -10.8% ... 858,695
July ........ 430,211 ... -2.7% ..... 1,288,906
August .... 503,540 ... -2.6% ..... 1,792,446
September 329,149 ... -5.7% ..... 2,121,595
October ... 164,107 ... -7.2% .... 2,285,702
November .. 75,596 ... -1.4% .... 2,361,298
December .. 70,365 ... +8.8% .... 2,431,663

Overall I'd expect break even on last year's numbers at best. There's fewer flights scheduled into Mahon from all destinations this year, so this is bound to have an affect on visitor numbers. Looking ahead, things should pick up again in 2011, but I'd expect to see visitor numbers remain at that level or even stumble again in 2012 as a result of the Olympic Games being held in London, which will attract a lot of holidaying families from the UK and Europe - especially if (God forbid) the £/€ rate is still as it is now.

Fewer visitors doesn't necessarily mean Menorca is worse off. The demographics have changed over past years, the island and businesses just need to make sure they are adaptable if it changes again.
