British TV

Post by magpie69 » January 10th, 2013, 5:53 pm

We have a TV in our apartment which has access to Spanish freview channels, but would like to watch BBC and the other major UK channels. We don't want a big Sky package or similar. Any suggestions from out there?

Do you have a dish on the apartments, or do you receive the TV through a terrestrial aerial?? If you have a dish, a large one 1+ meter diameter then all you need is a freeSat box. You can buy one in the UK but will be limited to channels transmitted for your UK area consumption only. Or you can buy one from over here which will pick up many more TV stations. If you do not have a satellite dish one will set you back around 600.00 Euros, I believe they recommend 1.2 meters minimum now.

But be warned that there are rumour's that BBC and ITV plus other UK channels will be moved to Astra 2d which has a beam that is tightly focused on the UK, if this come to fruition then the majority of Spain will lose these channels, and Menorca will be well outside of the foot print.

Thanks for the response. I know there is a shop in Alaior that fits dishes, so I might seek expert advice there when we go over in March. Googling astra brings up a load of technical information which just seems to cloud the issue to a dinosaur like me. Thanks again for the information.

He forgot to tell you that we here in Menorca have already lost channel five
I only let him think he's in charge.

Yes, I'm sure that's the one. The fellow in the shop seems to know what he's about, and speaks good English as a bonus.

We do not have any reception problems at any time of day, size of our dish? I don't know without going on the roof  We have lost Channel 5 [Ch5 HD is still live and kicking] and one of the 4 whatever channels. Otherwise at the moment everything is good.
